چکیده

The F/A-18 Hornet aircraft with the original flight control law exhibited an out-ofcontrol phenomenon known as the falling leaf mode. Several aircraft were lost due to the falling leaf mode and which led NAVAIR and Boeing to redesign the flight control law. The revised flight control law successfully suppressed the falling leaf mode during flight tests with aggressive maneuvers. This paper compares the robustness of the original (baseline) and revised control laws using linear analyses, Monte Carlo simulations, and nonlinear region-of-attraction analyses. The linear analyses indicate the revised controller only marginally improves the closed-loop robustness while the nonlinear analyses indicate a substantial improvement in robustness over the baseline controller. This example demonstrates the potential for nonlinear analyses to detect out-of-control phenomenon that are not evident from linear analyses.

Susceptibility of F/A-18 Flight Control Laws to the Falling Leaf Mode Part II: Nonlinear Analysis

The F/A-18 Hornet aircraft with the original flight control law exhibited an out-ofcontrol phenomenon known as the falling leaf mode. The falling leaf mode went undetected during the validation and verification stage of the flight control law. Several F/A-18 Hornet aircraft were lost due to the falling leaf mode which led to the redesign of the lateral-directional axis of the flight control law...

Assessment of aircraft flight controllers using nonlinear robustness analysis techniques

The current practice to validate flight control laws relies on applying linear analysis tools to assess the closed loop stability and performance characteristics about many trim conditions. Nonlinear simulations are used to provide further confidence in the linear analyses and also to uncover dynamic characteristics, e.g. limit cycles, which are not revealed by the linear analysis. This chapter...

Susceptibility of F/A-18 Flight Controllers to the Falling-Leaf Mode: Nonlinear Analysis

The F/A-18 Hornet aircraft with the original flight control law exhibited a nonlinear out-of-control phenomenon knownas the falling-leafmode. This unstablemodewas suppressed bymodifying the original control law. This paper employs the falling-leaf phenomenon as an example to demonstrate the utility of recently developed nonlinear analysis methods to flight control validation tools. The flight c...

Optimal nonlinear control of flight faults in manned aircrafts in the presence of fault and failure of control actuato

Control actuators' faults are among the major reasons to lose aircraft control while flights. The plane dynamics is severely dependent upon faults and errors in flight control systems and if the reformed control order is not issued by the fault tolerant controller there would be unpleasant outcomes such as inconsistency and the reduction of system performance and some dreadful aerial accide...
